Roundtable on “The Philosophy of Ecoregionalism in BRICS Development Strategies” Held in Moscow

On May 30, 2025, the Moscow Center for International Cooperation hosted a roundtable discussion titled “The Philosophy of Ecoregionalism in BRICS Development Strategies.” The event was jointly organized by the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics and the Moscow Center for International Cooperation.
The roundtable focused on current issues concerning the philosophy of ecoregionalism in the context of shaping strategic priorities within the BRICS alliance.

During the discussion, Professor Barkova explored theoretical aspects of incorporating Moscow’s humanitarian and cultural experience, along with international sustainable development practices, into a new philosophical paradigm for the BRICS member states. The proposed concept aims to preserve the cultural identity of Russia’s regions and affirm technological sovereignty as a foundation for strengthening Russia’s leadership within BRICS.

Among the notable presentations was a report by Sofia Ilyina, Head of the Legal Affairs Department, in which the philosophy of ecoregionalism was linked to Moscow’s forward-looking practices in international and intercultural cooperation. Today, Moscow is a focal point on the global stage and serves as a platform through which a new stage of historical development can be reached—one that opens the door to renewing the content and structure of the spiritual and material existence of regions, with potential benefits for all of Russia and, indeed, the world.

Ilyina presented an analysis of contemporary trends in the capital’s development, aimed at fostering an ecologically balanced urban environment. She outlined Moscow’s progressive initiatives that are essential to securing Russia’s leading role within the evolving BRICS alliance, as well as the city’s challenges in light of ecoregionalist philosophy and the need to formulate new strategies and pathways for urban improvement.
