Moscow and Dominican Republic Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Relations

On February 2, Moscow hosted a meeting between Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow, Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations, and Alejandro Arias Zarzuela, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to Russia. Both parties acknowledged the strong cooperation between Russia and Latin American cities and explored opportunities to further develop international relations.

Collaboration between the Russian and Dominican capitals has flourished over the past thirty years. In February 2022, during a visit by a Russian delegation to Santo Domingo, Sergey Cheremin and Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, Mayor of the Dominican Republic’s capital, signed a Cooperation Program for 2022-2024. The agreement focuses on joint initiatives in culture, heritage preservation, tourism, environmental protection, urban development, and public transport. Additionally, Moscow and Santo Domingo aim to enhance cooperation in e-governance and smart city technologies.

Sergey Cheremin also invited Dominican representatives to participate in the Festival of Latin American and Caribbean Cultures in July 2024.

In 2023, Dominican officials and the Embassy contributed materials showcasing the country’s vibrant culture to a major cultural and educational project. Dominican artists performed on the main stage of the Hermitage Garden, while the films “There Is a Country in the World…” and “The Disappeared of Jarabacoa” were screened as part of a film festival, drawing significant interest from both professionals and Moscow residents.

During the meeting, Sergey Cheremin extended an invitation for Dominican representatives to attend major forums and conferences in Moscow this year.

In autumn 2024, the International Council on Cultural Heritage will convene to discuss the management of cultural and industrial heritage sites in modern urban environments, their promotion, monument preservation efforts, and methods for safeguarding archaeological heritage. Foreign delegates may also find the International Transport Summit and UrbanTransportData of interest. The summit focuses on advancing transport and digital technologies in global megacities. Last year, despite sanctions, it attracted participation from companies and government officials across Europe, Southeast Asia, South and Central America, the Middle East, and Africa, with 23 delegations from over 20 cities in 19 countries visiting Moscow.
