Conference “Engaging with Compatriots Abroad at the Regional Level of the Russian Federation” Held in Moscow

On October 31, 2023, Moscow hosted the conference “Engaging with Compatriots Abroad at the Regional Level of the Russian Federation,” held as part of the World Thematic Conference of Compatriots.

The event brought together compatriots from over 20 countries, with representatives from 20 Russian regions participating in discussions both in person and online. Members of the World Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots also joined the dialogue.

The conference was opened by Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow, Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations. The Minister noted that Moscow maintains close cooperation with compatriot organizations in more than 60 countries, emphasizing that this engagement is a key focus of the city’s foreign policy efforts. “For a long time, Moscow was the only region in Russia with a law supporting the diaspora. We are pleased that Dagestan has now joined us,” said Cheremin, expressing hope that other Russian regions would follow suit.

Representatives from St. Petersburg, the Republics of Crimea and Tatarstan, Altai Krai, as well as Nizhny Novgorod and Omsk regions shared their experiences in working with compatriots abroad.

Speakers included Mikhail Drozdov, Chairman of the World Coordinating Council (China), along with compatriots from Abkhazia, Tunisia, Armenia, Romania, Moldova, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
