Moscow and Algeria Agree to Implement Joint Transport Projects

The Algerian side expressed readiness to facilitate the entry of Moscow-based organizations into the Algerian market.

From October 11 to 14, 2023, a Moscow delegation visited Algeria. The delegation was led by Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow, Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations. It also included representatives of Moscow’s Transport Complex, as well as construction and transportation companies.

The visit aimed at conducting negotiations and establishing practical cooperation in bilateral projects related to urban infrastructure, public transport systems (including metro networks), suburban rail connections, and housing and utilities.

The commitment to jointly implement projects in these areas was outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Moscow and the Wilaya of Algiers, signed in March of this year. This agreement was later reaffirmed during the June visit of Abdelmadjid Tebboune, President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria (PDRA), to the Russian Federation.

During talks between the head of the Moscow delegation, Sergey Cheremin, and the Governor of Algiers, Mohamed Abdenour Rabhi, discussions extended beyond transport issues to include prospects for cooperation in promoting the Russian language in Algerian educational institutions and organizing internships for Moscow healthcare specialists in Algeria. Sergey Cheremin invited Algerian experts to Moscow to exchange expertise on transport system digitalization, particularly through the example of the Unified Dispatch Center of the Moscow Metro, and to participate in the Urban Transport Data project.

On October 13, as part of the official visit to the PDRA, delegation members participated in the XIV Country Conference of Russian Compatriot Organizations in Algeria. The conference coincided with the opening of an exhibition featuring reproductions of paintings dedicated to the contributions of Soviet military personnel in clearing Algerian minefields (1963–1964) and the Algerian Revolution (1954–1962).
