Moscow Participates in Smart Nation Expo 2024

The theme of the 2024 event was “Innovative and Intelligent Solutions for Digital Transformation.”
A Moscow delegation led by Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow, Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations, took part in Smart Nation Expo 2024, a major showcase of the latest achievements in information and technological innovation. The event was held from November 17 to 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme “Innovative and Intelligent Solutions for Digital Transformation.” This marked Moscow’s second participation in the exhibition.

Smart Nation Expo 2024 is the region’s largest technology exhibition and serves as a key platform for connecting stakeholders with providers of innovative smart technologies and solutions.
The Moscow delegation included representatives from city departments and leading companies specializing in IT, smart city technologies, video surveillance, cybersecurity, urban planning, development, and more. Department for External Economic and International Relations organized Moscow’s participation and curated a large-scale, 160-square-meter interactive multimedia exhibit. The stand highlighted Moscow’s most relevant digital and urban projects in the areas of advanced technology, digitalization, and smart city integration—encompassing e-government, public digital services, urban management, education and healthcare, environment, labor resources, safety, and sustainability.

Supported by the Department for External Economic and International Relations and the Department of Information Technologies of Moscow, Moscow-based entrepreneurs presented high-tech and innovative developments. The event featured software and tech solution providers such as VisionLabs, offering video analytics and biometric technologies; Fivegen, showcasing video detectors for identifying issues in public utilities and urban infrastructure, including a live demonstration of a city map with real-time footage from monitoring cameras; and other companies at the forefront of facial recognition, cybersecurity, and virtual reality systems.
Participants also showcased unique products and solutions in biometrics, business process optimization platforms, neural networks, and gaming technologies.

The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including Sergey Cheremin. Following the opening, dignitaries toured the partner country pavilions. Malaysia’s Minister of Digital Technologies, Gobind Singh Deo, visited Moscow’s stand and was introduced to the city’s digital innovations and flagship smart city solutions.

Russia’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Nail Latypov, also visited the Moscow exhibition and, during a meeting with Cheremin, emphasized the practical significance of Moscow-based IT companies participating in one of the industry’s largest international events.

As part of the business program, the Moscow delegation held a series of meetings with Malaysian representatives focused on sustainable megacity development and the implementation of smart solutions in urban management. Both sides highlighted the importance of developing technology parks, fostering bilateral cooperation in high-tech sectors, and facilitating expert exchanges between Moscow and Malaysia.

A key highlight of the visit was a tour of Putrajaya, Malaysia’s newly built, high-tech administrative capital—constructed from the ground up in record time. The smart city is designed according to cutting-edge urban planning and digital governance standards and embodies the core principles of a city of the future.
Cheremin stressed that Moscow, as one of the world’s leading digital metropolises, is keen to cooperate with Malaysia’s capital in the areas of sustainable development and digital public services. He also extended an invitation for Malaysian counterparts to attend major international events hosted in Moscow.
The official Moscow delegation also took part in the Made in Moscow business mission in Kuala Lumpur, which included pitch sessions by Moscow-based companies.

During the event, company representatives presented their products, while city officials met with Nizam Rosli, Head of Global Alliances at the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, to discuss opportunities for bilateral business missions, as well as the organization of joint exhibitions, conferences, and other knowledge-sharing initiatives in the high-tech sector.

On November 20, the Asia Smart Cities Summit was held on the sidelines of the exhibition, where Sergey Cheremin delivered a keynote address titled “Smart and Sustainable Moscow.” In his speech, he outlined the capital’s progress and latest achievements in smart city development.

“Moscow is one of the world’s largest megacities and a magnet for both domestic and foreign investment, thanks to its well-developed infrastructure, strong consumer base, and its status as the nation’s capital. It is home to the headquarters and representative offices of leading Russian and international companies. Despite the continued tight monetary policy, investment activity is expected to grow. According to forecasts, capital investment in Moscow could exceed 8.2 trillion rubles in 2024,” Cheremin stated.
