Moscow Hosts Maslenitsa Celebration with Diplomatic Corps Participation

On February 20, Moscow hosted a festive event dedicated to Maslenitsa (Pancake Week), with representatives of the diplomatic corps in attendance. The event was organized by the Department for External Economic and International Relations of Moscow, with the support of the Moscow Centre for International Cooperation.

The event brought together heads and representatives of diplomatic missions from countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, underscoring the broad international interest in Russia’s cultural traditions and the strengthening of humanitarian engagement.

A cultural program was prepared for the guests, designed to introduce them to the traditions of this Russian folk festival. Members of the diplomatic corps took part in traditional Maslenitsa festivities, including the burning of the Maslenitsa effigy, and had the opportunity to sample pancakes – the festival’s signature dish, symbolizing the sun and abundance.

Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow and Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations of Moscow, delivered an official welcome to the diplomatic corps. In his address, he highlighted the special significance of Maslenitsa as one of the most vibrant folk holidays, symbolizing the change of seasons, renewal, and hope for the future. He emphasized that the preservation of cultural traditions and respect for historical heritage are an important part of the capital’s social life, and that the interest of international partners in Russian culture helps strengthen mutual understanding and develop friendly relations between nations.

Events such as this contribute to strengthening international humanitarian cooperation, expanding intercultural dialogue, and developing Moscow’s partnership ties with foreign countries.
