Supporting Russian compatriots in Algeria
As part of the activities to support Russian compatriots living in the Algerian People’s Democratic Republic, on October 11-15, 2023, a delegation of the Moscow government headed by the Minister, Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations Sergey Cheremin visited Algiers.
The Russian delegation included representatives of the Moscow Government, the Department of Transport and Development of Road Transport Infrastructure of Moscow, the Committee of Public Relations and Youth Policy of Moscow, SUE “Moscow Metro” JSC “Mosinzhproekt”, JSC “Transmashholding”, as well as representatives of the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos of Moscow and the Russian Institute of Theatrical Art GITIS.
The events were held with the support of the Moscow Government, the Russian Embassy in Algeria, the Moscow House of the Compatriot and the Moscow Center for International Cooperation. ANO “MCIC” acted as the operator of a number of events. The Center provided technical support, organized a traveling exhibition, and also ensured the presence of experts and conference speakers.
During the visit of the delegation a number of business meetings were held, through which the participants managed to reach agreements in the field of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation.
Within the framework of the visit, the XIV country conference of Russian compatriots was also held, which took place on October 13, 2023. The event was attended by Russian compatriots from various cities of the Algerian People’s Democratic Republic.
Alexander Marchenko, Charge d’affaires of Russia in Algeria, spoke at the opening of the conference. The deputy head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations of Moscow Igor Tkach read the welcoming speech of the head of the Department Sergey Cheremin. The director of the MDS Dmitry Kozhaev spoke about Moscow’s work with compatriots.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Chairman of the Algerian Coordinating Union of organizations of Russian compatriots Ruzanna Sidmun, winner of the contest “Great Stalingrad: our history, our memory” Maria Merush, coordinator of the team “Volunteers of Victory” of Algeria Karima Benlukil and others.
The participants discussed the work of Coordinating Union of Organizations of Russian compatriots and organizations of compatriots in Algeria, as well as further activities and plans. The Department for External Economic and International Relations of Moscow donated educational and methodological literature and other materials on the Russian language, culture and history to the Coordinating Union of Organizations of Russian compatriots in Algeria. Following the results of the conference, a resolution was adopted.
In addition, within the framework of the events, a traveling exhibition of reproductions of paintings dedicated to the contribution of Soviet servicemen to the demining of Algerian territory (1963-1964) and the Algerian Revolution (1954-1962), as well as photo documents on the topic “Cooperation between Moscow and Algeria” was organized.
The exhibition was presented at the hotel Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden. The pictures depicted significant events in the history of Algeria and the history of relations between our countries.
Furthermore, three divine services were held in the hall for church services and events dedicated to the Orthodox feast of the Holy Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, as well as a number of meetings with veteran organizations in Algeria.
