Moscow and Sukhum: Plans for the Future

Practical cooperation between the Russian capital and the Republic of Abkhazia in key areas of urban development was discussed in Moscow.

Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Government of Moscow and Head of the Department for External Economic and International Relations, met with Oleg Bartsits, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia.

During the talks, the parties outlined ways to strengthen the partnership, focusing on transferring Moscow’s expertise and implementing joint initiatives. The Abkhaz side expressed interest in adopting Moscow’s practices in digitalization, social policy, creative industries, tourism, and infrastructure.

“We count on the Moscow Government’s assistance in creating a modern ecosystem for creative industries in Abkhazia, which will become a driver of growth,” said Oleg Bartsits.

The Minister expressed particular gratitude to Moscow for its support in renovating the “Abkhazia” pavilion at VDNKh (the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy), noting that this venue will become a living symbol of Abkhaz culture and spirit in the heart of Russia.

Both sides confirmed their intention to move cooperation into the realm of concrete projects and substantive work. The meeting was a logical continuation of the dialogue: in April 2025, a Moscow delegation visited Sukhum to discuss a Cooperation Program between the two governments, which is expected to be signed this year.

Another hub for interaction between Moscow and Abkhazia for many years has been the Moscow House in Sukhum. In 2025, it hosted dozens of events bringing together culture, education, and traditions – from literary salons, chess tournaments, and conferences to large‑scale celebrations of Russian national holidays. The work of the Moscow House in Sukhum clearly demonstrates how humanitarian cooperation builds a solid foundation for long‑term partnership.
