Moscow to Host Key Environmental Forums in 2026

In 2026, Moscow will host major international environmental events — the 29th Session of Senior Officials of the UNESCAP Subregional Programme for Environmental Cooperation in North‑East Asia (NEASPEC) and the 6th International Forum on Low‑Carbon Cities.

These events will be an important part of Russia’s chairmanship of the NEASPEC programme and will underscore the country’s growing role in shaping the environmental agenda in the Asia‑Pacific region. A meeting between representatives of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Mr. G. Baasankhav, Director of the UNESCAP Subregional Office for East and North‑East Asia, confirmed the readiness for close cooperation within these initiatives.

The events will be organized jointly by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Government of Moscow to showcase best practices in sustainable urban development, including emission reduction technologies, energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly urban planning. Key challenges facing modern megacities — transport emissions, waste management, green infrastructure development, and urban adaptation to climate change — are planned to be discussed at the forums.

Moscow is already demonstrating significant success in environmental transformation:

🔹 waste sorting implemented in 95% of management organizations
🔹 over 100 electric buses put into service daily — one of the largest fleets in Europe
🔹 more than 30 new parks and squares created in recent years

At the forums, the capital will present case studies on intelligent air quality monitoring, smart lighting and heating systems, and projects to transform industrial zones into environmentally comfortable neighborhoods. Special attention will be paid to digital solutions — from environmental data analysis platforms to AI‑powered pollution forecasting models.

Representatives from more than 20 countries are expected to participate, including China, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, and Central Asian nations. The forums will serve as a platform for signing interregional agreements, launching joint pilot projects, and exchanging experience in green technologies.

Moscow’s participation in these events is not just a demonstration of achievements, but a contribution to the global goal of achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable urban development.
